Transliteration

Kosdes uses the Greek alphabet to show basic letter equivalents (for example, π = p). In vocabulary lists, transliteration is sometimes adjusted when letters combine (see Greek letter combinations below).

Letter names

Modern names are what you hear when Greeks recite the alphabet today—βήτα (víta), μι (mi), νι (ni). The classical name is the international list used in English, science, and classics: alpha, beta, mu, nu.

Example: άντρας → ántras
μπ → b sound

Example: λάμπα → lámpa

In Modern Greek, μπ can represent the b sound, as in English “lamp.” In λάμπα, it sounds like an English b, not a separate “m” followed by “p.”
